Description | Republic reporter Yvonne Wingett's in-depth weekend story on former Arizona Gov. Raul Castro got us thinking about the 1974 gubernatorial campaign in which Democrat Castro beat Republican Russ Williams.
The prospect of replacing three-term Republican Gov. Jack Williams attracted an interesting field of candidates, shown below on the cover of a vintage issue of Phoenix magazine.
The candidates are, from left: Castro, Republican Milt Graham, Russ Williams, Republican Evan Mecham, Democrat Jack Ross, Democrat Walter Caudill, Democrat Dave Moss, and Republican John Driggs.
Great footwear, guys!
Graham and Driggs were former Phoenix mayors. (Driggs beat the incumbent Graham in a hard-fought 1969 race.) Although Jack Williams was one, former Phoenix mayors typically fare poorly in gubernatorial races, as Graham and Driggs (and later Terry Goddard and Paul Johnson) found out.
Jim Pederson, today the leading Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, was a staff aide to Graham at Phoenix City Hall in the 1960s.
Mecham and Ross were Valley car dealers. |
