DescriptionMark Eyking has rarely felt so popular or so important.

"I'm getting courted like a young girl at a dance," chuckles the Liberal MP from Cape Breton. Eyking is ostensibly backing Scott Brison, the lone Atlantic candidate in the Liberal leadership marathon. But with seventh-place Brison expected to drop out after the first ballot on Dec. 2, Eyking is virtually a free agent. And so, all the top four contenders are wooing him assiduously.

Last weekend, Eyking squired second-place contender Bob Rae around Cape Breton, introducing him to the delegates from his riding, taking him on a tour of his farm and treating him to breakfast at his mother's.

Eyking warns against reading anything into the welcome given Rae, the second-place contender. He's done the same when other hopefuls have come to town.

"It just happened to be his turn. Mr. Rae was in town and we just showed him Cape Breton hospitality."
