Description"A federal grand jury indicted former N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Meg Scott Phipps Thursday on charges of conspiracy, bribery, witness tampering and fraud, adding to the legal woes that followed her narrow election win nearly three years ago.

Phipps faces up to 505 years in prison and more than $7 million in fines if convicted on the federal allegations that she took illegal cash donations, spent campaign money illegally, used the power of her office to get the donations, and then lied and altered documents to hide her trail.

The federal charges are more serious than similar state charges already filed against her."
