Description | At the heart of the controversy over the Israel Defense Forces' operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon is the disagreement between the air force and the field commanders. The ground units feel they were not used in full force, thus causing damage to the IDF's fighting image, while the air force conducted the war by itself almost to the end.
Chief of Staff Dan Halutz was blasted mainly by senior ground forces officers and major generals, while most of those who support him are air force officers.
The argument raises the question whether it appointing a chief of staff from the air force had been the right thing to do. The argument will certainly have bearing on the decision of whether to appoint a chief of staff from the air force in the future. It is doubtful whether this question would have risen were it not for the latest war in Lebanon. |
