DescriptionSégolène Royal is the top prospective presidential contender of the Socialist Party (PS) in France, according to a poll by CSA published in Le Parisien. 47 per cent of respondents would prefer to have the leader of the Poitou-Charentes regional government as a candidate.

Former presidential candidate and prime minister Lionel Jospin is second with 21 per cent, followed by former finance minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn with 16 per cent, former culture and education minister Jack Lang with 12 per cent, former prime minister Laurent Fabius with nine per cent, and current PS leader François Hollande with eight per cent.

On Sept. 4, Jospin hinted at a new candidacy, declaring, "I know that I am capable of assuming the duties of head of state. I want it to be the concerns of the French that are debated."

On Sept. 5, Royal held the first meeting of her campaign team in Paris. Edith Cresson, the first and only woman to serve as France’s prime minister, was present. PS members will select their presidential candidate in a primary election on Nov. 16.
