DescriptionMaui supporters of the opposing Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate agreed Thursday night that Congressman Ed Case clearly showed he was the more articulate in the face-to-face debate with Sen. Daniel Akaka.

But Akaka supporter Martin Luna said he believed that Akaka’s sincerity also was evident in the hourlong debate broadcast live over KHET television. Luna watched the program with about 25 other supporters at the Akaka headquarters, where the buzz after the debate remained positive.

"I don’t think the debate was necessary for the people who know Senator Akaka and Representative Case," Luna said. "For those who don’t, hopefully they can see beyond the differences, in the sincerity of the candidates.

"I don’t think anyone who knows Ed and who knows Senator Akaka was surprised at their presentations and the way they speak."

At Case’s Maui headquarters, staffer Pat Wong said he received a call from other supporters urging the campaign committee to get the debate rebroadcast on other stations.

"They were pleased with it, and they were saying we should make an effort to get it on other stations to let more people see it," he said.

"I personally feel that Ed hit the questions on the head, and I wouldn’t draw the same conclusion with the senator.
