DescriptionAP article in the Centre Daily Times.

An excerpt...
"Lobbyists and policy analysts on Tuesday suggested that dramatic cuts in the size of the General Assembly might be a positive step in reforming state government, but they also warned senators that the idea is no silver bullet.

The idea of reducing the size of the Legislature was discussed Tuesday at a public hearing on a bill introduced in October 2005 by Sen. John Pippy, R-Allegheny. The bill would shrink the number of senators from 50 to 30 and the number of House members from 203 to 121.

"We can't just do business as usual and expect things to get better. We have to shake up the whole system," Pippy said.

Gubernatorial candidate Lynn Swann put his support behind the bill Tuesday in written testimony submitted at the hearing.

"By allowing the people of Pennsylvania to decide the size of our General Assembly, we can confront the growing cynicism about the work of state government," Swann said in the testimony.

A message left for Gov. Ed Rendell's spokeswoman was not immediately returned Tuesday.

Pippy, Swann and other supporters of the bill argue that reducing the size of the Legislature will make state government more efficient and reduce costs by $77 million to $92 million."
