Description | Grupo Reforma. An Italian humanitarian association nominated Mexican President Vicente Fox “Abolitionist of the Year” in recognition of his work against the death penalty.
The award was received on Friday on the president’s behalf by Mexican Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs María del Refugio González.
“This is an enormous recognition of work carried out throughout civil society by the legislative branch and on the initiative of President Fox, to formally abolish the death penalty from the Constitution, even though it had not been applied for decades,” explained the diplomat.
The award, a bronze sculpture by Italian artist Massimo Liberti, was granted by the “Let No-one Touch Cain” association, which advocates the abolition of the death penalty, during the presentation of its annual report.
The prize was awarded to the Mexican president because on December 9 2005, his government removed the death penalty from the Constitution. |
