Description | Several hundred activists and leaders with the Libertarian Party are streaming into Portland for a national convention this weekend. Colin Fogarty reports.
Libertarian Party leaders are scrambling to prepare for five to seven hundred delegates.
Landing the biennial meeting of the National Libertarian Party is a boost to a state party that's steadily grown in influence.
Libertarians have fielded candidates for governor and other seats, acting as the spoiler in some cases.
State chair Richard Burke says his party is now focusing less on budget issues and more on civil liberties.
Richard Burke: "It was said very early in the war on terror that if the terrorists cause us to undermine our civil liberties than they've won. And George Bush I think is carrying a lot of their water right now."
One other sign of the party's influence -- Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron Saxton and a representative of Democratic Governor Ted Kulongoski will also attend the libertarian convention. |
