DescriptionSACRAMENTO — Assemblyman Tony Strickland, the No. 2 Republican in the California Assembly, said Friday that he has formed an exploratory committee to consider a campaign against U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.

Strickland, the Republican caucus chairman, contended Boxer is more liberal than the average California voter.

"Boxer's record of intolerance when it comes to (Republican) judicial nominations, her failure to support sound economic policies and her continued lack of support for our military and national defense prove she's out of touch," Strickland said.nator Boxer from the moment she first ran for statewide office."

He contended Strickland's record on abortion rights (search), gun control and environmental protection would make him "one of the most far-right candidates to ever run for statewide office in California."

"His record is clearly far to the right of other extremist candidates that Californians have repeatedly rejected," Behr said.

Former U.S. Treasurer Rosario Marin (search) of Huntington Beach has also formed a Senate exploratory committee, the first step toward formal entry into the campaign. Former Los Altos Hills Mayor Toni Casey is the only announced candidate for the GOP nomination against Boxer, who will be seeking a third term next year.
