DescriptionWell, well. Gas is $3 a gallon again, and politicians are making all sorts of goofy statements about how they’re shocked that the price is too high. They’re outraged, by golly, because the poor consumers are taking such a beating at the pump.

I just shake my head and laugh. For it is these very politicians and their predecessors who have encouraged the sprawling of America for 60 years, ever since the ration books closed at the end of World War II.

Their decisions ensured that we would have a highway-exclusive transportation system so we’d have to drive more miles to accomplish the essentials of daily life like going to the stores, doctor’s offices, schools and churches. Gas prices? Whaddya mean? We’re Americans. Cheap gas is in the Constitution.

And so, road builders, developers, oil companies and automakers have us driving longer distances on more roads, in more cars, so they all can continue to make record profits. It seems so normal we call it progress.
