Description | Jim Hines, a community activist who lobbied the state Legislature to get tougher on sex predators, now is campaigning to join the Legislature.
Hines announced Friday that he is running for the Senate seat being vacated by 16-year veteran Bob Oke, R-Port Orchard.
That will pit Hines against a former ally in the Republican primary election, because former Rep. Lois McMahan of Olalla also is seeking the nomination.
Hines and McMahan worked together in 2004 to persuade state lawmakers to tighten up the controversial Special Sex Offender Sentencing Alternative program. At their urging, the Democrat-controlled Legislature made it more difficult for sex offenders to avoid prison sentences by enrolling in the SSOSA program, which allows sex-crime defendants to serve little or no jail time if they undergo treatment.
Hines, 45, is a sales manager for Masterfoods USA. He also is a former member of the Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation board of directors. |
