DescriptionThe expected matchup in the 26th Legislative District became official this week when Rep. Derek Kilmer, D-Gig Harbor, announced he is seeking the state Senate seat being vacated by Republican Bob Oke.

Former Rep. Lois McMahan, an Olalla Republican, had announced her intention in January 2005 after Oke revealed he has a rare bone marrow cancer. She made it official earlier this month.

Oke is not seeking re-election.

Kilmer, 32, is finishing his first two-year term in the House. He is the business retention manager for the Economic Development Board of Tacoma-Pierce County, vice president of the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce and a trustee of Tacoma Community College.

McMahan, 63, has twice been elected to the state House. She also has lost four elections, including the 2004 race against Kilmer.
