DescriptionThe Democrats' partisan confidence and collegiality at their traditional campaign kickoff weekend stood in stark contrast to the downbeat, funereal atmosphere last year, after the party had suffered huge losses in the 2004 election. And two years ago, McCaskill was castigated by speakers angry over her decision to challenge the fellow Democrat then occupying the governor's mansion, Bob Holden.

Now, local Democrats say they're hearing from rural voters, especially the elderly, who are promising to return to the fold because of their anger and fear over the Medicaid cuts, higher fuel prices and the new Medicare prescription drug program.

"We're getting some of our base back," said state Rep. Wes Shoemyer, D-Clarence, who is a Democratic candidate for the 18th District state Senate seat that includes Hannibal.

Still, most Democrats agree that they are unlikely to retake control of the Legislature this fall. Republicans have a 31-seat edge in the House and outnumber Democrats by 11 in the Senate.

Harris and others say their hope is to dramatically cut those margins. But party chairman Wilson said Democrats have a chance to achieve what had seemed a year ago to be unimaginable: "With the Republicans' continued help, we could win in a landslide."
