DescriptionRepublican Dick Armey, former House Majority Leader and primary author of the Contract with America, announced his endorsement of Ed Bryant in the Republican primary to fill the U.S. Senate seat of outgoing Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist.

Armey pointed to Bryant’s demonstrated leadership in saying, “Ed Bryant came to Congress as a foot soldier in the Republican Revolution of 1994 which did the heavy work of cutting taxes, reforming welfare, and balancing the federal budget, but he quickly emerged as a talented and principled leader in that class. Whether leading the fight for a family-friendly tax code as chairman of the Congressional Family Caucus or being chosen by his colleagues to manage the impeachment of Bill Clinton, Ed handled every job with the skill, thoughtfulness, and class that Tennesseans deserve in their next Senator.”

Armey, a former professor of economics and one of the nation’s foremost advocates of fundamental tax reform, becomes the latest prominent economic conservative figure to offer support to Bryant in his Tennessee race. Armey joins business leaders across Tennessee and grassroots activists, such as Tennessee’s leading taxpayer advocate Ben Cunningham, who are coalescing with Tennessee’s social conservatives, as evidenced by Bryant’s earlier endorsement by Tennessee Right to Life and the Home School Legal Defense Association, to ensure that Frist’s seat is filled with a solid conservative who can defeat the Democrat’s nominee in the general election.
