Description | Failing to fulfill his campaign promise to reform state government, Gov. Rod Blagojevich is likely to lose this year's general election to GOP challenger and State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, according to a Democratic challenger seeking to oust the incumbent.
“To think that a Republican is set to run against corruption
while (former GOP governor) George Ryan is on trial and Blagojevich is in office just shows the sheer magnitude of the situation,” said Edwin Eisendrath, a former Chicago alderman who in December announced his bid to challenge Blagojevich in this year's primary.
Eisendrath stopped in Freeport on Thursday as part of an initial campaign swing. On the second leg of a trip through Rockford and Freeport, he met with The Journal-Standard and received a short walking tour of the city led by Freeport Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kim Grimes.
A former Chicago teacher and alderman - serving a north-side ward from 1987 to 1993 - Eisendrath said he is running to put into place reforms Blagojevich promised to implement four years ago. Despite such promises, Illinois is still dominated by monied interests, patronage and “pay-to-play” deals, according to Eisendrath.
“I'll beat him by campaigning all over the state and telling the truth,” he said. |
