Description | HELENA - While Brian Schweitzer's money and tireless campaigning have kept other Democrats out of the 2004 governor's race so far, the Republican primary figures to get even more crowded and perhaps more interesting by the day.
Among Republicans last week, gubernatorial candidate Bob Brown openly disagreed with Gov. Judy Martz, who still hasn't decided whether she'll run again. Secretary of State Brown, one of three GOP candidates for governor so far, seemed to be telling Montanans he may lead the state in a different direction than Martz has. Martz's shot back at Brown may signal her entry into the race is near.
Schweitzer drew a large crowd in Helena last week to hear George McGovern, 1972 Democratic presidential candidate and part-time Stevensville resident, speak at a fund-raising event. Many Democrats, not always the most united party, are coalescing behind Schweitzer. Or, as his supporters put it, Democrats are quickly realizing that the Schweitzer train is leaving the station and this is their chance to hop aboard.
As they have for weeks, Democrats continue to hammer on Martz, through letters, press releases and op-ed pieces, to spend some of the state's federal windfall on human-service programs. One week, it's U.S. Sen. Max Baucus writing Martz; the next, it's the Democratic legislative leaders weighing in. Last week, it was state Auditor John Morrison asking Martz to spend $3 million to provide health insurance for 10,000 uninsured Montana children. |
