Description | COLUMBUS - Ohio Democrats elected Chris Redfern as their new chairman last night in a vote marked by procedural haggling, cries of intimidation, and a gasp-drawing invocation of a Republican secretary of state.
Rhine McLin, the Dayton mayor who presided over the meeting of the party's executive committee as interim chairman, at one point dubbed the process "a true Democratic free-for-all."
Mr. Redfern, a state representative from Catawba Island and the House Democratic leader, beat Montgomery County Chairman Dennis Lieberman and Steve Reece, a Cincinnati community activist, to replace former Chairman Dennis White, who resigned last month. Mr. Redfern was running with the support of U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland, whom analysts call the Democratic frontrunner in the upcoming governor's race. |
