Description | Rob Capehart, chairman of the West Virginia Republic Party, will not seek the Republican nomination to run against U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., in 2006.
Capehart was the latest Senate candidate suggested in the media, but he told The State Journal Dec. 5 he officially is sticking with his current job of running the state's Republican party.
Morgantown lawyer Hiram Lewis already has announced his intention to seek the nomination next spring. Former West Virginia University basketball coach Gale Catlett had been rumored to be considering a Senate run, but he bowed out in November.
"It's become distracting to the operation of the (Republican) party. And quite frankly, it's become a drain on me," Capehart said. "It's in the best interest of the party for me to continue as chairman." |
