Description | Lamenting the failure of the Legislature to do so, Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu has called for the consolidation of the multiple levee boards in the New Orleans area. That plan, in a bill in the special session by Sen. Walter Boasso, R-Arabi, was watered down before it passed the Senate and then was killed without a hearing in the House.
Its defeat, noted prominently in the national press, provoked outrage among business leaders and residents in New Orleans and brought a promise by Boasso and GOP colleagues to press the issue again next year.
With his letter to legislators, Landrieu became the highest ranking state official to favor dismantling and merging the politically appointed boards charged with flood protection.
The only higher-ranking official, Gov. Kathleen Blanco, stayed neutral on Boasso's bill, sealing its fate, but later said she might consider the idea in a possible January special session.
