DescriptionCongress has paved the way for the widespread importation of cheap prescription drugs, lawmakers said Thursday.

A provision of the Commerce-Justice-State spending bill now speeding through Congress would bar the U.S. Trade Representative from blocking the practice in trade agreements.

The conferenced version of the bill has been approved by the House. It must now be approved by the Senate and be signed by the president, who would have to veto the whole bill - including spending projects from the FBI to repairs on the Hubble Space Telescope - in order to kill it.

There is no indication the White House plans to do so, said Sen. David Vitter, R-La.
