Description | The New Democratic Party has lost one of its 19 seats in the House of Commons, as MP Bev Desjarlais began sitting as an Independent on Tuesday.
Desjarlais lost the NDP nomination contest over the weekend in her northern Manitoba riding of Churchill. Niki Ashton, the 23-year-old daughter of provincial cabinet minister Steve Ashton, will represent the party when the next federal election campaign begins.
"As a result of the nomination, I've made a decision to sit as an Independent and to run as an Independent in the next federal election," Desjarlais said Monday. |
