DescriptionThe last Republican to be the majority leader in the Illinois House of Representatives is now a candidate for the congressional seat held by Democrat Melissa Bean.

State Representative Robert Churchill of Lake Villa in Lake County announced today that he is entering the increasingly crowded field of G-O-P candidates planning to run in their party's March 2006 primary.

Churchill has served in the state Legislature for nearly 20 years. His service was interrupted for four years after he ran and lost in the Republican primary for secretary of state in 1998.

He was majority leader in Springfield for two years after the 1994 elections in which Republicans rolled to victory across the nation, and even regained control of the U-S House.
