DescriptionPritt says charges dropped years ago

BY LAURA KELLAMS ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

Drew Pritt, a recently announced candidate for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor, acknowledged Wednesday that he’s been in trouble with the law several times for writing hot personal checks but said he made good on his debts and learned his lesson.

Pritt faced felony charges in Bradley and Drew counties in 1999 and 2000, respectively, but made restitution, and the charges were dropped. He also said he was arrested once in Jonesboro in a similar case, around the same time, and was "arrested or detained for a few days" in West Virginia in a check-writing case.

"I’m not proud of what happened," Pritt said. "But I’m definitely not the first Arkansan to struggle with my finances."

He said his financial record is irrelevant to whether he’d make a good lieutenant governor because, if elected, he could hire someone who’s good with money. He said that would be no different from a governor who was a recovering alcoholic removing all the alcoholic beverages from the Governor’s Mansion.

He said he’s gotten counseling in dealing with money and uses only cash now.

Pritt announced last week that he’d be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor and made national news when he said that, if elected, he would be the first openly gay person to hold statewide office. "Talking about this period of my life and how I lost control [financially ] is harder to talk about now than being gay," Pritt said. "I screwed up, but I learned my lesson."
