Description | Spring Mill State Park -- U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar rolled out his reelection effort while speaking in Lawrence County on Friday, April 22, 2005. In the remarks to the County Lincoln Day Dinner crowd, Lugar said, "I want to tell my friends in Lawrence County I will be a candidate for the Republican nomination," in 2006.
During Lugar's remarks, he spoke to three areas he plans on making campaign themes in the coming months: education, energy and the economy. On education, Lugar stressed the need for local, state and federal governments to live up to the motto of No Child Left Behind. "This is not merely a slogan; it must be what we all work towards," said Lugar. "We can not be satisfied with most children not left behind."
Lugar also stressed the need for the United States to become more energy independent. With the cost of oil continuing to rise, and the ever increasing demand worldwide for energy, the United States needs to look more closely at its resources, such as biomass and clean coal technology.
