DescriptionAUSTIN, Minn. (AllPolitics, Oct. 8) -- Minnesota's Senate race heated up as current Democratic Sen. Paul Wellstone faced his opponent, former Republican Sen. Rudy Boschwitz, in a debate Monday night. The two candidates focused on rural and agricultural issues, clashing bitterly over the federal government's farm policy.

This year's campaign is round two of a rivalry between the two men that began during the 1990 election when Wellstone, then a college professor, beat then incumbent Sen. Boschwitz by only 2 percentage points. They are known for occupying completely opposite positions on nearly every issue.

Boschwitz supports the new "Freedom to Farm" legislation, which was based in part on work he did during his 12-year tenure in the Senate. The law phases out federal farm subsidies over the next seven years while eliminating planting restrictions. "Minnesota farmers are going to profit very nicely ... There is a good decade ahead for agriculture," he said during the debate.
