DescriptionFormer U.S. Rep. Tim Roemer, D-South Bend, says he will announce his decision on whether to run for the U.S. Senate "late next week."

The race would pit Roemer, who held his House seat for six terms before bowing out at the end of 2002, against U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, the Republican incumbent who will seek re-election to his sixth term in 2006.

Roemer said last month that he would decide "pretty quickly" whether to enter the race but didn't say how quickly "pretty quickly" might be.

In the meantime, he has been acting like a candidate by making public comments critical of the administration, White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove and the Republican Party's policy on abortion.

While moderating a discussion on nuclear proliferation, Roemer, a member of the 9/11 Commission, indicated his belief that the Bush administration and Congress have not done enough to curb nuclear proliferation.

He was quoted in an Associated Press story as saying, "The terrorists keep on expediting their timetable and putting more urgency into it, but we seem to be getting more complacent and skating on thinner ice."

"Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding of our attackers," Rove was quoted as saying. "Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war."
