DescriptionIowa Gov. Tom Vilsack will become chairman next month of the Democratic Leadership Council, the moderate group that launched Bill Clinton toward the presidency, leading Democrats in Washington, D.C., and Iowa said Monday.

Vilsack is scheduled to address the group at July's National Conversation, the annual conference to be held in Columbus, Ohio, where the new leadership team will be formally introduced.

Vilsack was vacationing on the New Jersey shore Monday and could not be reached for comment. Aides to the governor declined to comment.

Vilsack has expressed interest in running for president and has steadily risen as a national Democrat in the past two years. However, strategists and scholars say becoming DLC chairman alone is not enough to elevate the relatively unknown governor into the top tier of would-be 2008 candidates.
