Description | Will Evan Bayh run for president? Easy question. Answer: Yes.
Bayh already is running. And why not?
Forget about the lack of a formal announcement of candidacy. That doesn't signal the actual start of a presidential campaign. That comes only after a campaign does well in fund-raising, organizing and standing in the polls. That will come, if all goes well, after the 2006 elections.
Bayh, the senator from Indiana, is running now, fast as he can, to get to the plateau that would enable him to be a serious contender for the 2008 Democratic nomination for president. Early starts are essential. Many a potential contender will be weeded out even before the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary. And it is important already to make or plan appearances in those two key states, as Bayh is doing. A candidate deemed to be off to a poor start will find fund-raising difficult, news coverage scant and volunteers scattering.
Timing could be right for Bayh. He has the executive experience of two terms as governor of Indiana, the legislative experience as he now serves in his second term in the Senate and the proven vote-getting ability as a Democrat who wins big in a Republican state.
Being from a Republican state that hasn't voted for a Democrat for president since 1964 is, however, a problem for Bayh. |
