Description | June 25, 2003
Groups trying to remove Gov. Gray Davis from office have turned in fewer than half the signatures they need to force a recall election, Secretary of State Kevin Shelley announced yesterday.
Sponsors of the Republican-led drive maintained they are on track to force a recall election this fall while opponents contended the tabulation demonstrates that petitioners' claims of success are inflated.
To force a recall election, petitions bearing the valid signatures of at least 897,158 registered California voters must be submitted to county election officials by Sept. 2. As of June 16, registrars had received 376,008 signatures whose validity has yet to be verified.
San Diego County generated 72,000 signatures – more than any other county.
