RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley can claim to speak for Democrats, Republicans and independents as he negotiates a budget with state lawmakers over the next week. The Democratic governor has strong support among all those groups, according to a poll to be released today.
More than three-fifths (62 percent) of N.C. voters approve of Easley's job performance, while 24 percent disapprove, according to the poll conducted earlier this month for the N.C. Center for Voter Education.
More voters of all political stripes said they approved of his work than disapproved -- including self-identified conservative Republicans.
President Bush, on the other hand, gets mixed reviews. Forty-nine percent of those polled approved of his work, compared with 46 percent who disliked his job performance. A national Gallup Poll conducted this month has Bush's approval rating at 47 percent and disapproval at 51 percent.
Support for the president is much stronger in the Charlotte region (60 percent) than it is statewide. Statistically, support for Easley in Charlotte is about the same as it is statewide (59 percent). |
