DescriptionBURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - More than two dozen leading Vermont Democrats are lining up behind the expected Senate campaign of the state's independent representative to Congress, Bernard Sanders.

Sanders began rallying supporters in late April shortly after Sen. Jim Jeffords announced he wouldn't run for re-election in 2006.

"Twenty-five leading Democrats support my candidacy," said Sanders.

Sanders has received endorsements from former Democratic Gov. Phil Hoff; Senate President Pro Tempore Peter Welch, D-Windsor, and House Speaker Gaye Symington, D-Jericho.

Sanders has just begun making calls for support, promises a list of Republicans, as well as a longer list of Democrats, who will support his independent campaign for Jeffords' Senate seat.
