DescriptionColumbia) June 2, 2005 - A Richland County deputy has lost his job after he shot and killed the sheriff's dog.

The incident happened Monday when Sheriff Leon Lott was at the beach with his family. Lott says the deputy was supposed to do a routine check of the sheriff's home while he was away. The dog, named Rocky, was in the backyard.

The sheriff says Deputy Ricky Sirois shot the dog because the animal growled at him.
