OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's scandal-plagued ruling Liberals now have a slight lead, largely because backing for the opposition Conservatives is on the wane, according to a new opinion poll released on Friday.
The Strategic Counsel poll for the Globe and Mail newspaper showed the Liberals had 30 percent public support compared with 28 percent for the opposition Conservatives, who vowed on Wednesday to bring down the government as soon as they could.
Polls by other firms over the last few weeks have generally given the Conservatives a lead of around five percentage points over the Liberals, who are mired in a government corruption scandal.
Prime Minister Paul Martin went on national television last week to plead for more time in office and this week struck a deal with the small left-leaning New Democrats to boost spending in exchange for a promise to back his budget. |
