Republicans hoping that Sen. Robert Byrd, in his eighth term, would retire next year — and open the way for a GOP pickup in a state that has twice backed President Bush — were in for a disappointment late last week, when Byrd’s office announced his first-quarter fundraising numbers.
In the first three months of the year, Byrd reeled in more $1.1 million — “more than he had raised in any other quarter for a previous Senate campaign,” the senator’s spokesman, Tom Gavin, said. |
