Description | The season of the hit series West Wing concluded last week with the Democratic National Convention's nomination of Congressman Matt Santos of Texas, a former mayor of Houston played by actor Jimmy Smits. The final plot twist of the popular television program guarantees that our fictional favorite son will kick off his campaign next fall against Republican opponent and California Sen. Arnold Vinick, as portrayed by Alan Alda.
The Santos character seems to be modeled on the pre-scandal Henry Cisneros, the charismatic former mayor of San Antonio and housing and urban development secretary during the Clinton administration. Until the revelation of an affair between the married Cisneros and a political organizer, and his subsequent guilty plea for lying to investigators, Cisneros was considered a likely future candidate for governor of Texas. |
