Description | Former state Sen. Bruce McPherson easily won Senate approval to become California's 29th secretary of state, but an Assembly committee put off a vote on his nomination until after lawmakers' 11-day spring recess.
"This is a solid appointment," Senate President Don Perata said Thursday before his house voted 34-0 to confirm Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's choice of McPherson to replace Kevin Shelley as the state's top elections official. "We all know Bruce. We've all served with him. It's unnecessary to spend too much time praising him."
But Assemblywoman Cindy Montanez, the chairwoman of the Assembly Rules Committee, said some members of her house weren't as familiar with McPherson and needed more time to consider the appointment. |
