Description | The state Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would require drivers to use hands-free devices when talking on their cell phones.
Under the proposed law, if you’re caught holding a cell phone when you’re pulled over for another infraction, such as speeding, you could be slapped with an extra $101 fine.
“We want to make sure that both of your hands are on the wheel,” said Sen. Tracey Eide (D-Federal Way), who sponsored the bill and has been working on the issue for five years. “It’s only a safety issue. It’s not any different from wearing a safety belt.”
Opponents of the bill called it unnecessary.
“This bill is government intrusion,” said Sen. Pam Roach (R-Auburn). “I just think we’ve gone too far and people of this state are not happy about it.”
The Senate passed the bill 28-18, with three members excused. It now goes to the House. |
