Description LOS ANGELES – Dogged by a yearlong corruption investigation and poll results depicting tomorrow's primary election as a statistical three-way tie, Mayor James Hahn is in danger of becoming the first Los Angeles mayor in a generation to not win re-election.

With voters and the media distracted until recently by mudslides, celebrity trials and the Academy Awards, only a fraction of the electorate is expected to show up tomorrow. Adding to the uncertainty, Hahn and his two main challengers, Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa and former Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg, only in recent days launched the type of aggressive attack ads that capture voter attention.

"It's as close as they get," said Councilman Eric Garcetti, who is backing Hahn. "Everybody I've talked to can't call this one." Hahn, a 24-year political veteran, finds each region of the city under assault from one of his four top challengers. Villaraigosa is staking a claim to working-class Latinos on the eastside and affluent liberals on the city's westside. Hertzberg, who roomed with Villaraigosa in Sacramento until they had a falling out, is wooing the vote-rich west San Fernando Valley.
