Description | Philadelphia Inquirer article.
An excerpt...
"As state Treasurer Robert P. Casey Jr. moves closer to a decision on challenging Sen. Rick Santorum (R.,Pa.), the footing is getting more treacherous, with a potential rival saying yesterday that she would not step aside in a primary, as some Democratic leaders had hoped.
After a day of intrigue, Barbara Hafer, a former state treasurer and supporter of abortion rights, said she was "moving forward" and did not fear challenging the antiabortion Casey for the Democratic nomination.
In a late afternoon telephone call, Gov. Rendell tried to persuade Hafer to stay out of the race in the interest of party unity, according to several sources familiar with the conversation.
Hafer remembered the "little chat" differently. "He did not ask me not to run," she said. "I said I'm in."
Penny Lee, the governor's spokeswoman, confirmed that Rendell - a key player in the party's endorsement process - spoke with Hafer yesterday, but would not disclose the nature of that discussion.
"It is the governor's hope that we have a united front going forward," Lee said." |
