DescriptionOK, now that’s gotta be cheating.

The Spokane City Council voted Monday to annex 207 acres – and some 1,640 people – into its city limits, securing its claim to the title of second-largest city in Washington. For now.

Tacoma briefly took the honor a couple of years ago after suffering decades of embarrassment in third place, and the race was on to claim the coveted title of Washington’s largest city (outside of Seattle).

Tacoma leaders were in no mood Tuesday to offer congratulations.

"I think this is an act of desperation by Spokane," said City Councilman Tom Stenger.

Mayor Bill Baarsma downplayed the significance of Tacoma’s setback, saying it didn’t really mean much.

"It was kind of fun to be ahead for a short time," he conceded.

And then he immediately began drooling over the prospect of annexing Browns Point and Dash Point into his city limits.

Spokane took the smug high road by refraining from issuing a news release or otherwise trumpeting its good news.

Mayor Jim West even sounded a bit self-deprecating, noting that city officials didn’t initiate the annexation but rather the folks who were annexed requested it.

"People actually want to get into the city now," West said. "We’re in a growth pattern. Spokane is a city on the move."

And then he rubbed salt in Tacoma’s wound by complimenting his defeated rival: "Tacoma is a good city," West said.

Ouch.
