DescriptionAbout 15 years ago I overheard something I will never forget. On a Chicago sidewalk, a father was standing with his young son. The kid, maybe 4 or 5 years old, was sobbing. And the dad was yelling, "Quit that! Boys don't cry. That's for girls and queers!"

Queer.

"Queer Eye for The Straight Guy" notwithstanding, it's seldom said in kindness.

And so I was taken aback when I heard Maya Marcel-Keyes this week use it to describe herself in what some might consider a double epithet. She called herself a "liberal queer."

Ms. Keyes is the daughter of Illinois' unforgettable and failed U.S. Senate candidate, Alan Keyes. Mr. Keyes, you may remember, in one of his campaign rants at the Republican convention last summer took aim at Vice President Dick Cheney's gay daughter, Mary. He dubbed her a "selfish hedonist" because she lived a lesbian lifestyle. Keyes in his own creepy prose condemned gays and lesbians who used "organs of procreation" for "selfish pleasure."

But Alan Keyes went even further. Unasked, he volunteered: "If my own daughter were a homosexual or a lesbian, I would love my daughter, but I would tell my daughter that she was in sin."
