Description | Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger waded into the Los Angeles mayor's race Thursday, saying the Los Angeles Unified School District is too big and inefficient and throwing his support behind candidate Bob Hertzberg's effort to break up the nearly 750,000-student district.
Schwarzenegger's statement provoked a firestorm of criticism from other mayoral candidates and Superintendent Roy Romer but raised the possibility the plan might become more feasible if the governor decides to actively work for it. Noting how the State Board of Education blocked the San Fernando Valley's school breakup effort before, Hertzberg said his plan might need to go on the state ballot as an initiative to ease the rules.
State Education Secretary Richard Riordan, the former Los Angeles mayor and a Hertzberg supporter, said the governor has often spoken of the benefits of smaller schools and smaller districts. |
