Description | House Speaker Steve Sviggum, seeking to recruit support for Republicans' slim two-vote majority, named two DFLers Wednesday to vice chairmanships of finance committees.
Sviggum picked Rep. David Dill, DFL-Crane Lake, as vice chairman of the Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources Finance Committee, and Rep. Joe Opatz, DFL-St. Cloud, for that position in the Higher Education Finance Committee.
He said they would be involved in negotiations about how much money should go to specific areas of the budget.
"Every member can make themselves the deciding vote," Sviggum said. "Without question, that entered into some of the decisions."
Republicans will hold majorities of at least two votes in most committees, padding the lead to seven votes in the purse-string-holding Ways and Means Committee.
Sviggum said he thinks he has at least the 67 votes he needs to be reelected as speaker when the House convenes Tuesday. The House is split 68-66 for the GOP. |
