DescriptionST. PAUL - Attorney General Mike Hatch is urging CenterPoint Energy to move more quickly to restore heat for up to 790 customers whose heat was turned off when they failed to pay their bills.

The Public Utilities Commission had asked the attorney general to help look into whether the company had told customers that the so-called Cold Weather Rule may allow them to have their heat reconnected.

From Oct. 15 to April 15, the rule obligates utilities to reconnect heat to customers who ask and enter a repayment schedule or reconnection plan. Customers who earn less than half of the state's median income may qualify for a reconnection plan, which limits payments to 10 percent of the monthly household income.

"We have documented instances when people were not told they could qualify for a reconnection plan," said Janet Gonzalez, energy unit manager at the commission. "Our concern is that the special rights of lower-income people are not being adhered to."
