Former councilman Coleman joins St. Paul mayor's race

| Description | With a couple of big-name backers on the paperwork, former City Council Member Chris Coleman registered a mayoral campaign committee in St. Paul on Tuesday.
Coleman, 43, and Ramsey County Commissioner Rafael Ortega are the first two candidates to enter the race to unseat Mayor Randy Kelly, who is expected to seek a second term. Coleman, who served on the council from 1997 to 2003, plans to launch his campaign next month. William Finney, the former longtime St. Paul police chief, and George Latimer, a former St. Paul mayor, are serving as his campaign chairmen.
"I'm honored to have two of the elder statesmen of St. Paul as part of the team," Coleman said.
He will try to break a slump of second-generation politicos who have tried and failed to seek higher office. Coleman is the sixth of seven children of the late Nicholas Coleman, who served 18 years in the state Senate, including eight as majority leader, before his death in 1981.
