DescriptionA local tax on gasoline could replace Tippecanoe County's wheel tax if legislation being discussed by state lawmakers and local leaders passes in the upcoming session of the General Assembly.

At a meeting of the Tippecanoe County Council on Tuesday, councilman David Byers said he has discussed with several lawmakers the idea of drafting legislation that would give Indiana counties the option to place a local tax on gasoline.

Byers said the county would need to levy a tax of 4 cents to 5 cents per gallon of gas to replace the wheel tax.

Starting Jan. 1, the wheel tax will charge $20 a year on most passenger vehicles. It is expected to generate $2.28 million in revenue for improving and maintaining local roads and streets. The county will get about $1.2 million, and the rest will be distributed among the cities and towns.
