Description | Winding down after 27 years of doing other people's work, U.S. Sen. Bob Graham did the last of his famed "workdays" in Broward County Thursday, teaching two courses at Fort Lauderdale High School.
Workdays began as a political gimmick to get the then little-known Florida senator from Miami Lakes attention during his first run for governor in 1977. During that campaign Graham's first Broward labor was digging a trench for a sewer pipe on East Oakland Park Boulevard.
But what started as a campaign photo op and a way to soften the public image of the Harvard-educated multi-millionaire evolved into a learning experience for Graham. He fell in love with workdays and what they taught him, so he continued them through his two terms as governor and three terms as senator. |
