DescriptionDes Moines Register article.

An excerpt..."Iowa stands alone among the states with one of its two legislative bodies split down the middle.

Senate Democrats chose their leaders Sunday to take part in a new power-sharing arrangement with Republicans. The Nov. 2 election produced a 25-25 tie in the Iowa Senate, which had been controlled by the GOP for eight years.

Sen. Michael Gronstal of Council Bluffs will continue to lead the Senate Democratic caucus, but he will no longer have the title of minority leader. He will have equal rank with the next Republican leader, who is likely to be Sen. Stewart Iverson of Dows.

Sen. Jack Kibbie of Emmetsburg, a veteran rural lawmaker who won his first Statehouse election 44 years ago, was the pick of Senate Democrats on Sunday to be Senate president - a post that will be shared with Republicans on a rotating basis. Sen. Robert Dvorsky of Coralville was the Democrats' choice for president pro tempore."
