Description | An intense race is brewing in the 76th state assembly district.
Lori Saldana -- the surprise Democratic primary winner -- is campaigning against Republican Tricia Hunter for the seat.
Saldana, a community college teacher who beat better-known candidates in the Democratic primary, says education is her first priority. She says that low-income voters feel the same way.
"They can get better jobs, they can bring their families out of poverty and that helps their community, that helps our city, and eventually, that helps our state," Saldana said.
Hunter says her priority is state business. She wants to help businesses by lowering the cost of workers' compensation.
"It should be a streamlined system; it shouldn't cost more to get health care if you're in a workers' compensation system verses when you get injured and end up at an emergency room in a hospital," Hunter said.
Hunter supports Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's recent veto of a proposed increase in the state's minimum wage, saying, "If we're going to increase the minimum wage, it's going to be a federal fight, otherwise, we make California an uneven playing field."
While Saldana has not commented on the state's minimum wage, she is more willing to criticize the governor, saying he should not have vetoed legislation designed to clean California's air and allowed the importation of low-cost prescription drugs from Canada.
"I'm a hometown girl, and I'm going to stand up for San Diego, and if he's doing something that affects San Diego, then I'll let him know we need to come up with another path," Saldana said. |
